Butterfly Hug
Find Calm Through Self-Connection
A gentle nervous system regulation practice that helps create feelings of safety, calm, and emotional support.
When we feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally activated, or disconnected from ourselves, our nervous system can become stuck in a state of protection.
The Butterfly Hug is a simple self-soothing technique that uses gentle bilateral stimulation to help calm the body and bring us back into the present moment.
This practice reminds your nervous system that you are safe, supported, and capable of holding yourself with compassion.

Why It Works
The Butterfly Hug engages both sides of the body through gentle alternating taps.
This rhythmic movement can help:
🌿 Reduce feelings of anxiety
🌿 Calm emotional overwhelm
🌿 Increase feelings of safety
🌿 Support emotional regulation
🌿 Encourage self-compassion

The Practice

Cross Your Arms
Place your hands across your chest so your fingertips rest just below your collarbones.

Create Butterfly Wings
Allow your hands to rest comfortably while imagining butterfly wings gently folded across your chest.

Alternate Tapping
Slowly tap left, right, left, right in a gentle rhythm.
Continue for 30–60 seconds.

Breathe Slowly
As you tap, take slow breaths and allow your body to soften.
